Local communities are urged to create welcoming environments for wildlife
Residents, community groups and organisations in and around Aylesbury Vale are being invited to get creative and take part in an exciting wildlife conservation competition being launched by the Haddenham & Waddesdon Community Board.
In partnership with Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), Chiltern Rangers and the mental health charity Lindengate, the competition is open to individuals, community groups, town and parish councils and schools.
Anyone with an interest in protecting and enhancing local wildlife and environmental habitats from the local community board areas can enter - including Buckingham & Villages and Winslow & Villages.
A decade-long battle to stop 1,000 homes being built on the fields that inspired Watership Down is facing a final hurdle at an inquiry.
West Berkshire District Council has refused several applications to build on Sandleford Park in Newbury since plans were first unveiled in 2011.
Another application was rejected last year, prompting developers to appeal, with a Planning Inspectorate inquiry starting today. It is scheduled to last until May 28.
The woodland inspired Richard Adams to pen his children s classic - with the author fighting against proposals before his death in 2016.
Thousands of fans flock to Sandleford Warren each year to follow in the footsteps of the novel s gang of rabbits.
WATCH: Red Kite steals park-goers picnic food A Red Kite has been captured stealing visitor s food at a popular Marlow park. The video sees the Red Kite flying low to the ground at Higginson park before taking park-goers food. Once a rare sight only found in Wales, the bird of prey was successfully reintroduced in several areas of the UK, including the Chilterns, in a bid to save it from extinction. Largely scavengers, Red Kites usually eat carrion and scraps but there have been reports of them attacking families and walkers in search of food.
Watch the video here: In 2019, the Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust warned that some Red Kites are becoming tame because people keep feeding them.
RESIDENTS in part of Oxfordshire are being urged to transform their gardens and community green spaces into friendly environments for wildlife to thrive. The 18-month-long Wild Bicester project which has just launched aims to bring people and nature together to create a ‘greener, healthier and wilder Bicester’. The scheme is being delivered by Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), Bicester Garden Town, Cherwell District Council, Healthy Bicester and the town council. It will encourage and enable people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved and turn their homes and other local green spaces into wildlife-rich areas. Some of the ways people can do this include creating a bee hotel, growing a wildlife-friendly vegetable garden, building a hedgehog home and learning how to attract butterflies to their garden.
