2021 Summer Youth Programs
This summer, we re offering virtual and in-person options for our summer camps and Young Leaders Institute sessions for high school students.
In a world more globally connected than ever before, leaders need to be well prepared with the right knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors to be successful. Asia Society s Young Leaders Institute (YLI) is a week-long summer program for high school students that promotes global competence, elevates leadership skills, and connects students from across diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Since launching in 2016, the Young Leaders Institute has provided new perspectives and strengthened skills for over 300 students. The Institute s sixth year explores some of the most timely, relevant global issues for young leaders facing a world transformed by COVID-19.
Cindy Fan, Jayathi Murthy, Karen Umemoto, Roger Wakimoto and David Yoo expressed how the work to create a more equitable society has never been more important.

The Inadequacy of the Term “Asian American”
Sarath Suong has often felt like the term “Asian American” doesn’t really serve him.
A Cambodian refugee who immigrated to the US as a child, Suong prefers to identify as Southeast Asian instead.
“I was told that I am Asian American when we came here,” he says. “But I faced a lot of colorism, a lot of classism, and not a lot of understanding about who Southeast Asians are and how we fit into the Asian American context.”
Suong’s family was among tens of thousands of refugees who fled during the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, eventually settling in the Boston area. When he arrived in the US, he struggled to find his footing in a country where everyone from teachers to neighbors made him feel unwelcome.
