As an activist, I never thought I’d ever wish this but with all of this anti-Asian American racism, especially the attacks on our elderly, I wish that we were invisible. But this is a false choice. For decades as a psychotherapist and diversity consultant, I’ve been a persistent advocate of making the contributions of Asian Americans more known in this country’s narrative. However, instead of celebrating and affirming Asian Americans, we are all witnessing the scapegoating and senseless victimization of AAPIs, especially ironic considering May is AAPI heritage month.

9th annual Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration

ORLANDO, Fla. - On Friday, Orange County will hold its 9th annual Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration. Only this year, the event will be held virtually.
The one-hour Orange County special, organized by Orange County Asian Committee, will include Asian American cultural performances and a Distinguished Asian American Outstanding Community Service award. Winners of an Asian-themed art contest will also be announced.
Local Asian Americans say the event is especially important this year, as attacks against Asian American Pacific Islanders are on the rise nationwide.
FOX 35 s Valerie Boey will emcee the 9th annual Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration, along with Kenway Wong, an attorney at Akerman LLP and President-Elect of the Greater Orlando Asian American Bar Association.
For Asian American Women, Racism And Misogyny Have Always Been Intertwined
A new report lays out how AAPI women have experienced the toxic combination of racism and misogyny throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
In March, when a white gunman in Georgia killed six women of Asian descent in a string of shootings, many Asian American and Pacific Islanders, especially AAPI women, were horrified but not surprised. AAPI women and girls know all too well the toxic combination of racism and misogyny, which is often reinforced through media and culture. And, as a new report released Thursday lays out, AAPI women have experienced the consequences of that toxicity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

In April, the U.S. Senate passed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act in response to increased violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Before he boarded a plane to return to Washington Monday, Vermont Congressman Peter Welch joined advocates to discuss the importance of the bill.
S.937 passed the Senate on a 95 to 1 vote and was passed by the House Tuesday on a 364-62 vote. The bill says “there were nearly 3,800 reported cases of anti-Asian discrimination and incidents related to COVID–19 between March 19, 2020, and February 28, 2021, in all 50 States and the District of Columbia.”
Vermont at-large Congressman Peter Welch, a Democrat, calls the escalating hate crimes against those of Asian-Americans and Pacific Island descent unacceptable.
