Op-ed: How the University should support AAPI students

Op-eds By Grace Bautista Apr 19, 2021 1:22 AM Grace Bautista is a senior and the historian for the GW Asian American Student Association. Over the past few weeks, Asian American and Pacific Islander student leaders at GW were faced with the horrific news of the March 16 shooting in Atlanta, where a violent hate crime took the lives of eight people, six of whom were Asian women. During our grief and processing, many of us also learned we had finally won our yearslong fight for an Asian American studies minor. It was a bittersweet moment. For members of the Asian American Student Association who had been advocating for the minor for years, it seemed as if this moment would never arrive. But the minor’s implementation is a reminder of all we have faced this year and how far GW still needs to go to provide AAPI students with the resources and support we deserve.

As Asian hate crimes surge, Mr and Ms Asian OU contestants see opportunity to support community

This evening in the Oklahoma Memorial Union’s Meacham Auditorium, the Asian American Student Association will crown the winners of its 30th Annual Mr. and Miss Asian OU Scholarship Pageant. What would typically be a festive night to showcase and celebrate the university’s diverse Asian community has been underscored by months of hate and fear unlike anything the United States has seen in recent years.  As hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have risen 149 percent between 2019 and 2020, participants in this year’s pageant said they are aware of the newfound significance the title holds, should they win. Some were even inspired to participate by the adversity their community faces.

Uneven funding changes for student organizations spark debate in OU Undergraduate Student Congress meeting

The Student Government Association Undergraduate Student Congress passed two bills relating to student organizations’ funding that generated debate on the amount of funding multicultural organizations received, and they nominated members for numerous administrative positions Tuesday. Budget Committee Chair Lauren Patton presented a bill appropriating SGA funds to governmental student organizations at OU, including Campus Activities Council, SGA Undergraduate Student Congress, SGA Graduate Student Senate, the SGA Executive Branch and Student Bar Association. Some congress members questioned why CAC received an increase in funding this year. Patton explained CAC had “unfairly” received a cut last year due to budget restrictions. “We were able to work with them — they knew (they would be) going into primary (funding) last year and supplemented during auxiliary (funding) at the beginning of this year, but we wanted to return them more to what they were supp
