Prime minister Scott Morrison has acknowledged that there is a substantial shift underway in the geopolitics of climate change, but don’t expect this to translate into any meaningful response on the part of the Morrison government any time soon.
In a speech to the AFR Business Summit, Morrison said that he now acknowledges that global politics has shifted and that there are new expectations on countries to lift their ambition on climate change.
“The world’s response to climate change is simultaneously reshaping the global economy, global politics and the global energy system,” Morrison said.
“We are preparing. Australia is preparing. The Australian government is preparing for this new geopolitics of energy and climate change. It’s gone into another gear. We must address the threats and we must realise the opportunities for Australia.”

Gold and nickel miner Province Resources has unveiled plans to build 1 gigawatt of wind and solar capacity in Western Australia, from which it plans to manufacturer green hydrogen.
The planned site for the wind and solar farms is in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, just south of Carnarvon. The miner says the region is ideal for both wind and solar generation, as it is the fourth windiest place in Australia and has 211 sunny days per year.
It hopes the project, which it is calling HyEnergy, will make 60,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum, or up to 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia.

Australian natural resources company Province Resources has unveiled a plan to produce green hydrogen from 1GW of wind and solar energy in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia.
The company normally focused on the exploration and development of various minerals such as copper or gold made the announcement for the gigawatt-scale green hydrogen project in the wake of its planned acquisition of exploration firm Ozexco.
Ozexco holds exploration license applications for minerals such as salt and potash in the region, which Province Resources says is also potentially suitable for a renewable green hydrogen development on a gigawatt scale called HyEnergy.
