News By Brennan Fiske May 10, 2021 1:02 PM This year’s virtual Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration turned its focus to highlight ongoing advocacy work after a recent rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans nationwide. The Multicultural Student Services Center and supporting organizations hosted the annual programming itinerary last month, with events that ranged from hula basics to supporting small businesses. In light of the rise in hate crimes, organizers said this year’s theme, “Unlearning : Cultivating ,” was especially timely to empower others to become advocates, uplift APIA voices and help students unlearn racism and microaggressions.

In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Tuesday’s Google Doodle celebrated Nisei short-story author Hisaye Yamamoto, among the first Asian Americans to receive post-war national literary recognition. Throughout an acclaimed career, Yamamoto constructed candid and incisive stories that aimed to bridge the cultural divide between first- and second-generation Japanese Americans by detailing their experiences in the wake of World War II. Born on Aug. 23, 1921, in Redondo Beach, Yamamoto was the daughter of Japanese immigrant parents from Kumamoto Prefecture. In her teens, she wrote articles for a daily newspaper for Japanese Californians under the pen name Napoleon.

WASHINGTON Announcing a $250 million initiative, a new philanthropic organization has revealed plans to galvanize resources, help meet the needs of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and combat anti-Asian hate. On May 3, The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) announced it has raised $125 million from among its board members as part of an initiative to create what is believed to be the largest philanthropic commitment in support of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) organizations and causes in recent memory. In the aftermath of the tragic Atlanta-area shootings in March, TAAF distributed gifts of $1 million each to Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Stop AAPI Hate, and the National Asian American Women’s Forum.
