In March, when much of the nation shut down in response to the coronavirus landing on American shores, the Anti-Defamation League estimated that there were at least 57 instances of anti-Asian harassment and violence nationwide.
And in recent weeks, the string of violence and anti-Asian sentiment has reached another breaking point one that has disproportionately targeted vulnerable Asian seniors in the Bay Area.
A fatal attack on an 84-year-old Thai man in San Francisco. A violent attack of an 91-year-old man in Oakland’s Chinatown. An attack and robbery of a 64-year-old Vietnamese woman in San Jose. Another one, targeting a man at a San Leandro bank. Graffiti outside of a Chinese school in San Francisco. That s just in the span of two weeks.

Police were stepping up their patrols and volunteers were increasing their street presence after several violent attacks on older Asians stoked fear in the San Francisco Bay Area’s Chinatowns and subdued the celebratory mood leading up to Lunar New Year.
City officials have also visited Chinatowns in San Francisco and Oakland this week to address residents’ safety concerns and condemn the violence.
They vowed to combat a problem that has been simmering since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but sparked new outrage after two unprovoked attacks were caught on video within a span of days and spread widely online.

Robberies and assaults against Asian Americans in the Bay Area have them fearful, Asian leaders said at a news briefing earlier this week.
In 2020 in the Bay Area, about 700 cases of racism and discrimination against Asian Americans occurred between March 19 and the end of the year, according to Stop AAPI Hate, a coalition formed to address the issue during the pandemic.
Thirty-five cases were against elderly Asian Americans. Many cases, whether against seniors or others, apparently go unreported. Our community is fearful of being in public alone, said Cynthia Choi, co-executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, which works to protect immigrant rights, promote language diversity, and remedy injustice.
