Researchers set new resolution record for imaging the human eye

E-Mail IMAGE: The researchers customized this adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope to improve the imaging resolution by strategically blocking light in various locations of the instrument. Using less light is an advantage. view more  Credit: Johnny Tam, National Eye Institute WASHINGTON Researchers have developed a noninvasive technique that can capture images of rod and cone photoreceptors with unprecedented detail. The advance could lead to new treatments and earlier detection for retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss. We are hopeful that this technique will better reveal subtle changes in the size, shape and distribution of rod and cone photoreceptors in diseases that affect the retina, said research team leader Johnny Tam from the National Eye Institute. Figuring out what happens to these cells before they are lost is an important step toward developing earlier interventions to treat and prevent blindness.

Highly efficient metasurface poised to improve communication and biosensing

E-Mail IMAGE: Researchers created a new plasmonic metasurface that sandwiches fluorescent dye molecules between a gold film and 100-nanometer-wide silver cubes. When light hits this structure, it excites localized surface plasmons, which. view more  Credit: Maiken H. Mikkelsen, Duke University WASHINGTON Researchers have created a new plasmonic metasurface that achieves record high light efficiency over the entire centimeter-scale metasurface. The advance makes the new nanostructured thin film practical for use in a variety of applications from light-based communication to fluorescence-based biosensing. The major obstacles for using plasmonic structures for practical applications is that they are either too inefficient or their nanoscale properties aren t easily scalable to larger sizes, said research team leader Maiken H. Mikkelsen from Duke University. We designed and optimized a plasmonic metasurface that overcomes both of these limitations.

Researchers demonstrate nondestructive mid-infrared imaging using entangled photons

This structure cannot be sufficiently analyzed with commercial systems at. view more  Credit: Aron Vanselow and Sven Ramelow, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin WASHINGTON Researchers have shown that entangled photons can be used to improve the penetration depth of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in highly scattering materials. The method represents a way to perform OCT with mid-infrared wavelengths and could be useful for non-destructive testing and analysis of materials such as ceramics and paint samples. OCT is a nondestructive imaging method that provides detailed 3D images of subsurface structures. OCT is typically performed using visible or near-infrared wavelengths because light sources and detectors for these wavelengths are readily available. However, these wavelengths don t penetrate very deeply into highly scattering or
