Several Waterford IT union officers resign in protest over merger deal

Waterford, Ireland / WLR Apr 30, 2021 | 8:56 AM Several union officers at Waterford Institute of Technology have resigned after a backlash against last week’s TUSE ballot. It comes as the application for Technological University status is expected to be lodged later today. The Teachers’ Union of Ireland branch had voted against the plans – but turnout was only 24 percent. At an emergency meeting last night, members voted to re-ballot the deal, and this will take place online instead of via post. Four of the branch’s officers have now resigned in protest, claiming that the new ballot holds “no assurances” for staff. In a letter to members, she and the other resigning officers said there had been “a lot of finger pointing” around last week’s ballot, but that the four would “respect the right of all members to have opinions that differ from our own”.

The Teachers Union of Ireland branch at the college has cited treatment of members serving on the amalgamation s working groups, as well as concerns regarding funding and governance. The Technological University has been on course to be founded for next January. It is a major reversal from when the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was put to WIT staff in 2019. On that occasion it was overwhelmingly accepted by 93% of TUI members.

TUI concerned over lack of clarity with COVID-19 vaccine priority list

Share this article The Teachers Union of Ireland says they have concerns about the lack of clarity regarding the vaccine priority list. It comes after the Minister for Health asked his department to examine the possibility of vaccinating younger age groups against COVID-19 earlier to reduce transmission of the virus. Stephen Donnelly is proposing that people aged 18 to 30 would get their inoculations before those aged 30 to 50, once people in their 60s are vaccinated. The CEO of the HSE said that he is not aware of any plans to change the vaccine priority list. However, Paul Reid added that the health service is ready to make adjustments from the aged based system if asked to do so by Government.
