UNICEF Malawi COVID-19 Situation Report: 14 March – 14 April 2021 Format Highlights • Despite the reduction in the number of new COVID-19 cases recorded in Malawi over the past few weeks, the state of national disaster which was declared on 12 January 2021 is still in place as the Government is mindful to prevent a third wave which is possible if preventive measures are not observed. • COVID-19 vaccination in Malawi began on 11 March 2021. As of 06 April 2021, 164,733 people had been vaccinated. Malawi aims to immunize 3.8 million people by the end of 2021. So far the country has received 510,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (360,000 COVAX facility, 100,000 AU and 50,000 from the Government of India).

Secondary Schools Teachers Initiate Own Union

Interim President of the union, Pilirani Kapolo has confirmed . Kapolo has told local reporters Online today that Secondary School Teachers Union is a break away from Teachers Union of Malawi , TUM accusing the TUM leadership of lack of transparency on the use of monthly financial contributions and ignoring the welfare of secondary school teachers and students since its establishment. TUM president Willy Malimba says they have not received any communication about the formation of the new union but said there is nothing wrong for such an initiative because it is their right. TUM in court over teachers strike

The Tonse Alliance wants to obtain an injunction over the ongoing teachers strike describing it as illegal. On Friday. the TUM leadership failed to appear before court on grounds that they needed more time to prepare.
