The biennial ALICE report shows many were struggling to make ends meet before the pandemic. Memorial parade canceled, ceremony still on. To protect aging veterans and others who usually attend the Holland Memorial Day parade, the event has been canceled. However, a socially distanced ceremony is still planned.

It certainly isn’t typical dinner table conversation, but let’s give it the spotlight for Arbor Day, Friday April 30, because our forests need our help to thrive. Our forests face several threats. Over the past two decades, emerald ash borer destroyed nearly all the ash trees in Michigan. Land managers must constantly be monitoring and treating oak wilt, hemlock woolly adelgid, and beech bark, while looking out for other forests pests. They must also plan ahead to ensure our forests stay healthy for generations to come.

Grand Rapids Public Museum receives national grant for prototype of digital experience around Grand River

Grand Rapids Business Journal Courtesy GRPM The Grand Rapids Public Museum was awarded a $100,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for the prototyping of a web-based, mobile game that explores the history of the Grand River. The National Endowment for the Humanities’ (NEH) Digital Projects for the Public grants support projects such as websites, mobile applications, games and virtual environments that significantly contribute to the public’s engagement with humanities ideas. “The museum is honored to have been awarded this grant to continue using technology to make history, science and culture more accessible for the community,” said Alex Forist, GRPM’s chief curator. “Our team has been working diligently to adapt to an increase in demand for digital cultural resources by families, students, educators, historians and more, and this grant allows us to test out experiences, to learn what resonates best with the public, to encourage further curiosity

In an opinion issued Thursday, Dec. 17, an Appeals Court panel said an Ottawa County judge wrongly dismissed two lawsuits in 2019. The type of lumber should not have been used in an outdoor setting and showed significant rot in some areas.
