Lockdown measures have proved that much of the work performed by chartered accountants can be done remotely, with some even reporting extensive productivity gains from a shift online.
However, there are aspects of this new way of working that have raised concerns among accountancy professionals, chief among them recruitment and training – two parts of the profession that are perceived to require a more personal touch.
The recruitment impact
COVID -19 has had a dramatic effect on the UK’s labour market and recruitment is no exception to this. Consultancies have reported renewed downward pressure on UK pay in January, backed up by a fall in starting salaries and temporary wages in January, according to a KPMG and Recruitment & Employment Federation (REC) UK report on jobs.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak has extended the three-point Plan for Jobs, increased minimum wage and introduced new schemes to help businesses recover after coronavirus, yet measures to plug skills gaps in employment have come under fire.

Recruitment firm Hays has written to HM Treasury to demand that the roll-out of the IR35 private sector reforms be postponed for another year, as firms are already struggling to cope with the ongoing fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.
