Norway s Kongsberg Maritime announced on February 10 it had won a contract to supply a range of electric frequency converter-driven deck machinery for six ice-class LNG carriers (LNGCs), and potentially another four, that will be chartered by Russian gas firm Novatek.
The vessels will be built by Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), and will each be equipped with two combined windlasses and mooring winches capable of handling a 17-metric ton anchor with a 111mm anchor chain, plus a further seven mooring winches. The windlasses and mooring winches are designed to work in temperatures as low as -52°C, and they also feature an electrically-operated, spring-loaded band brake, as requested by Novatek.
