ACOBE Fest goes virtual, expands this year

Dawn DeCwikiel-Kane GREENSBORO — Over the last three years, A Celebration of Black Excellence had featured stirring performances by a community choir, Western Guilford High School’s jazz band and more recently, local singers and speakers. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit shortly after last year’s ACOBE Fest and continues to prevent crowds from gathering, founder Jordan Lee didn’t think he could make the festival happen this fourth year. His supporters disagreed. “They’re like, ‘No, it still needs to happen,’” Lee said “’Just how are you going to make it happen in a different way?’” Lee contemplated how to do that.

MAJOR, 50 University of Miami, Miami When Major joined the faculty of the University of Miami in 2019, it was a homecoming for the associate professor of professional practice. Major was born and raised in Miami, and his late mother worked in child care at the university, where he would head when his school day finished. “When I would get out of elementary school, I would spend my time running around that campus,” he says. Now he’s teaching management and strategy classes in UM’s MBA program, where he takes an interactive approach in the classroom. “I make participation a huge part of my classes,” he says. “When it comes to strategy, it’s not black and white. There is so much in terms of gray areas, so talking through that is hugely important.”
