High school student-athletes in certain sports will be required to wear masks at all times, even during competition, according to an announcement from the Virginia High School League on Thursday night. The VHSL noted in a news release that the Virginia Department of Health “strongly advises” athletes to wear masks at all times during “group training, competition and on the sidelines” during times of “substantial COVID-19 activity.” The release further states that the league understands participation in sports presents “physical and psychological health benefits” and that risks of contracting the virus can be decreased if “athletes, coaches, officials and spectators follow public health guidelines.”
