My first parish as an ordained pastor was in prime deer hunting country. So, I offered an early Sunday service. Timing was important so I asked the advice of our Council who said 5:30 a.m. I innocently asked why so early as it was not going to be light for another two hours. Their answer was clear, so they could have time to get comfortably situated in their blinds. A ritual in which all hunters joined was sighting up their guns at the gravel pit. I did reasonably well after a time hitting the target of the tin cans. I then discovered a group of teens who did not have dads to take them hunting. There was no school during deer season. I thoroughly enjoyed the walks in the woods and never told any of the youth I never took the safety off my 3006.
