The Argus series were the only clandestine nuclear ever conducted by the United States.The rocket-launched nuclear warheads were set off at very high altitudes over the South Atlantic,1800 km south-west of Capetown,South Africa. The purpose was to determine the effects of nuclear tests explosions on the Earth’s
magnetic field and the impact to military radar, communications, satellites and ballistic missiles electronics. The earth’s magnetic field is not only off-axis from the earth,but also off centre from the earth’s core. This means the Van Allen Radiation belts are closest to the earth in the region known as the ‘South Atlantic Anomaly’.

Patrons at Logan City Council Libraries will be treated to an out-of-this-world
experience during the 2021 National Simultaneous Storytime.
NASA astronaut Dr Shannon Walker will present this year’s featured book Give me some space by author and illustrator Philip Bunting from the International Space Station on Wednesday, May 19.
The story, about a young girl’s dreams of life in space and completing her mission, will be read simultaneously to more than one million children across Australia and New Zealand.
Seeing the Earth from space “turns you into an environmentalist”, former NASA astronaut Andy Thomas says.
Thomas, a native Adelaidean, flew four space missions, spending about six months in space, much of it on Russia’s Mir space station.
He describes what it’s like to get such a different perspective – it’s been dubbed the “Overview Effect”.
“You get an appreciation of the finite resources represented by the Earth,” he says.
“I remember one day I was flying and there were some fires burning in Central America, in Nicaragua. They use slash and burn farming practices there and the deforestation is a tragedy.
