CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas â Everyone is invited to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year at Dao Authentic Asian Cuisine Chinese Restaurant in Corpus Christi.
Employees at the restaurant have been practicing the traditional colorful Lion Dance in honor the Lunar New Year.The restaurant will be holding its celebration, Thursday, February 11th from 2pm until 4pm.
Dao Authentic Asian Cuisine Chinese Restaurant is located at 2033 Airline Road near Holly Road. The Lunar New Year falls on February 12th. People will bid farewell to the Year of the Rat and usher in the Year of the Ox.
“Chinese New Year is always about family. Our CNY traditions have vastly evolved over the years as we grew up. When we were young, our parents used to take us to their friends’ homes to bai leen [give our best wishes] and collect lai see. I remember learning about basic money management concepts and the importance of saving as a result of these customs. My mum opened bank accounts for us and would deposit our lai see money in there each year.
By the time we were about eight years old, we learned to play the famous card game Chor Dai Dee, or Big Two as it’s called in English. In our teenage years we used to go to an aunty’s home where she or my mother would take turns to be the banker and we’d try to win money. We would play all sorts of card games from Big Small, to Blackjack betting with our lai see money. Small bets, of course. I’m happy to report that, today, none of us have a gambling addiction.

Few people will have been sorry to see the end of 2020, a year characterized by the global COVID-19 pandemic. For those who follow the Chinese new year, the close of the tragic and tumultuous Year of the Rat is fast approaching, too.
Feb. 12 marks the beginning of the Year of the Ox. The second animal of the Chinese zodiac, the ox denotes the hard work, positivity and honesty that will be manifested in all of us in the coming 12 months, according to astrologers.
Jupiter Lai, a Hong-Kong based Chinese and Western astrologer, says the ox is “grounded, loyal, gentle and trustworthy.”
