I don’t know about you, but I often mentally brace myself for Lent. The season feels so long, so winter-ridden, and in this time of lingering pandemic, especially isolating. Yet, the Online Etymology Dictionary reminds me that Lent comes from an Old English word meaning “lengthening of the day,” “spring.”
Perhaps we’re called to approach Lent not as a marathon of tasks meant to break our will but as a blossoming born of accompanying Christ through the desert, an opportunity to grow in our relationship with him along the way.

Pope Francis announced the “Year of St. Joseph” on Dec. 8 to inspire believers of Christ across the globe to venerate the man who “accepted Mary unconditionally,” taught the value of “participating in the work of salvation” and was a tender earthly father to Jesus.
The God Squad Canada, a Catholic men’s society headquartered in Calgary, answered the call to honour the man who Pope Pius IX decreed in 1870 as patron of the Catholic Church by hosting a virtual fundraiser called A Dram for St. Joseph Jan. 16.
This online gathering, streamed on YouTube, featured musical performances from the St. Francis Xavier Chaplaincy choir and traditional Celtic music from Ireland while participants indulged in various brands of whiskey from the comfort of their own homes.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Pakistan has announced that it is dedicating 2021 as the Year of St. Joseph.
The year-long observance was announced by Archbishop Joseph Arshad, president of the bishops’ conference, in a special video message on YouTube channel Ave Maria Catholic TV on Jan. 12.
“Blessed Pope Pius IX had also declared a Year of St. Joseph in 1870 as patron of the universal Church, and to celebrate the anniversary we in our diocese also began this year on January 1, 2021, so that we may give more reverence to St. Joseph and change our lives,” the prelate said in his message to the faithful.

For 65 years, Sr. Sue Mosteller has been a Sister of St. Joseph, but her relationship with St. Joseph himself reaches back even further. As a 17-year-old boarding student at the congregation’s Toronto girls’ school (up from the United States, and an Anglican to boot), Mosteller and her sister were called into the office and given a piece of devastating news far away in Ohio, their father had died.
