Covid-19: Hampshire Hospitals visiting rules start to be relaxed

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is reducing visitor restrictions but says strict measures remain in force. The trust today announced the start of a gradual relaxation of the visiting restrictions that were imposed due to Covid-19. Today the trust was treating seven Covid patients in Basingstoke hospitals, one in the RHCH in Winchester and none in Andover. In January the trust was treating more than 160, including 57 at the RHCH. Julie Dawes, chief nurse at the trust, said: Visitor restrictions are not something that we would ever wish to implement for extended periods of time. “Anyone who has worked in the NHS will have seen the positive impact relatives, loved ones and friends can have on a patient - an extra set of eyes, a familiar face and voice. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has necessitated many changes which we didn’t think possible just over a year ago.

Hospital said target for C-sections was an error

THE trust which runs Basingstoke hospital said an “error” was published in its meeting papers regarding caesarean sections after serious concerns were raised. As previously reported, figures from Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust (HHFT) board of directors showed that more women have caesareans to deliver their baby at its hospitals than the national average. According to the report, it had failed to meet its target set against a ‘monthly goal’ for every month since February 2020. However, two weeks after the Gazette published an article on this, the trust has now released a statement to say the papers incorrectly referred to a ‘national benchmark’ for caesarean sections.

Hampshire Hospitals makes changes after Andover woman s fall

The NHS trust that runs Winchester hospital says it has made changes to its procedures at an inquest into the death of an “amazing” grandmother who fell while unsupervised on one of their wards. Loretta Ako, an acting clinical matron at Hampshire Hospitals Trust, apologised to the family of Helen Penfound after she fell in the toilet of Basingstoke hospital and fractured her left femur. A coroner found that this broken leg caused “further deterioration” and “reduced her ability to recover” from the impact of an earlier fall. The trust has since introduced changes to its procedures to ensure this kind of incident does not happen again.

Chief nurse reveals impact of Covid on Hampshire hospitals

Hampshire Hospital campaign THE brutal reality of the coronavirus pandemic is being felt across Hampshire hospitals during the second wave. Every day, the story of Covid-19 is being retold in figures: grim statistics about infection rates in the community, hospital admissions, and the UK death total now over 100,000. For Julie Dawes, chief nurse at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundations trust which runs Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Andover War Memorial Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital, the pandemic is a daily challenge for her. She told the Chronicle: “The number of patients going into critical care is on the increase the key thing is to keep managing those patients really well and making sure we are able to use staff as flexibly as possible to care for patients. It is a long time now for staff to have been caring for patients and wearing PPE so there’s no doubt that staff are feeling tired.
