BASILDON could become a “ghetto” for travellers if Government demands for almost 50 permanent pitches are met. Council bosses fear the borough would be “overrun” with permanent sites, with the planning inspectorate now demanding 47 permanent sites are established across the borough. This comes after the inspectorate rebuffed the council’s local plan which had accounted for 15 permanent sites in the borough. Kerry Smith, deputy leader of Basildon Council, urged them to reconsider the “unreasonable” demands. He said: “It simply isn’t fair. “It would create a ghetto in both Basildon and Thurrock. “The plots of land need to be generous. There just isn’t the space for 47 generous plots of land.”
