Some of the biggest winners in this most challenging year, 2020, were the healthcare workers and the first responders, they who daily placed their lives on the line to keep us healthy and safe. We’re talking about the doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and orderlies, and all the other support staff who worked assiduously behind the scenes to make sure that the process worked as best it could under very tough coronavirus circumstances. A grateful nation says thanks!
We also must salute and offer our thanks to the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Rhonda Sealey Thomas, the Chief Health Inspector, Sharon Martin, the Director of the Laboratory at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC), Dr Lester Simon, the Medical Director at the MSJMC, Dr. Albert Duncan, and the Minister of Health, Sir Molwyn Joseph. It is that time of the year when we compile our list of winners and losers for 2020. Of course, we cannot possibly publish the list in one editorial, so we will be citing them in upcoming articles over the next few days.
A huge loser in this dreadful year was Mother Nature. She was desecrated and spat upon by selfish developers who seemed to care only about their little playgrounds. Mr Zhang Yida’s crocodile tears on national television did nothing to allay our conviction that there is much that is untoward in his silly, almost childlike, attempt to build a beach over a rocky shoreline. It is an exercise in futility, in our minds, and one that will result in the displacement of much sand. His removal of the mangroves is also a most-dastardly deed that will long live in infamy. Prime Minister Gaston Browne has promised to uphold the legacy of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, affectionately known as Papa Bird, by being at the vanguard of the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) – a party the late national hero led for more than 25 years.
Comparing his drive to develop Antigua and Barbuda to that of the late prime minister, Browne said he would prevent excessive malfeasance in public office and would not allow people who intend to act on their personal interests to permeate his party.
During his speech at the wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the life and contributions of the late “Father of the Nation” on Wednesday, Browne explained: ” From time to time we have comrades who may become ill focused, who may seek to put their personal interest above that of the institution.
