Henderson County News: Bruce Drysdale, Etowah get new principals

The Henderson County School Board was given an overview Wednesday of the local preliminary 2021-22 fiscal year budget, which includes a focus on sprucing up school auditoriums and replacing musical instruments.
Superintendent John Bryant and Chief Finance Officer Bernie Sochia gave a presentation to the board on a preliminary budget plan.
HCPS is requesting $31.4 million in local funding for its operating budget, which includes $1.5 million in capital outlay funding, part of which will be used on the auditoriums and to buy musical instruments.
Those line items are:
$160,000 to replace auditorium seating at Apple Valley Middle
$130,000 each to replace the sound and lighting systems in the auditoriums at West Henderson and East Henderson high schools
Nominated were Dr. Jan King, Marilyn Yoder and Anne Boyette.
King, an assistant superintendent with the Henderson County Public Schools, has been nominated for the state DKG Founders Award reserved for women who have made outstanding contributions beyond the local and regional levels.
In March King will have spent 28 years serving the students and staff of Henderson County public schools with a wide range of classroom experience and educational leadership. She began her education career with the school system in 1992 as a classroom teacher at Dana Elementary, Apple Valley Middle and West Henderson High schools. She then became a specialist for the Academically and Intellectually Gifted programs at West Henderson High, Hendersonville Middle, Bruce Drysdale Elementary and Edneyville Elementary schools, before serving as an instructional coach for all the county s high schools.
Shanice Hill, a sixth-grade math teacher at Apple Valley Middle, is one of 27 finalists in the state for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching 2020 Prudential NC Beginning Teacher of the Year Award.
The Beginning Teacher of the Year process was developed to honor beginning teachers and to retain those who show promise as excellent teachers and education leaders in state public schools and public charter schools, according to a news release from Henderson County Public Schools. As we all know, challenges abound for any educator at the onset of their teaching career,” said Jan King, asstistant superintendent of instructional services.”Navigating the routine challenges of a first year teacher in the midst of a global pandemic makes Shanice Hill’s recognition even more impressive and meaningful.
