APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Appleton students are back in the classroom, and there could be more tests in their future. To help keep students safe, the district is now offering coronavirus testing in the schools for students showing symptoms.
The Appleton Area School District is now offering rapid antigen testing for symptomatic elementary school students.
Jill Rohan, a registered nurse with AASD, tells FOX 11….
“We use six feet social distancing. We use the masks. We’re doing the extra cleaning. This is just another extra level of mitigation to keep our kids safe.”
The test being used is the BinaxNOW antigen test, which a CDC study found is 64% accurate for catching symptomatic cases and 35% accurate for asymptomatic cases.

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Appleton Area School District is now offering in-person learning. The youngest learners through 4th graders are fully in-person. Middle and high schoolers are in a blended model.
For many, like veteran crossing guard Dennis Murphy, January isn’t exactly synonymous with “back to school.”
“It’s a little slower than I thought, but I’m anxious to be back, it’s colder than I thought.”
But, it’s the first week many students in the Appleton Area School District are back in the classroom since March.
And Ed Rathsack was there to pick up his grandson.

APPLETON - It s the middle of January and snow is on the ground. But in many ways, Tuesday felt like the first day of school in the Appleton Area School District.
Around 8 a.m., Highlands Elementary fluttered with activity as kids hopped off school buses, toting big backpacks full of school supplies. Teachers and school staff stood nearby to greet them. Parents snapped photos of their children outside of the school, then escorted them to the front door where they said goodbye, sometimes tearfully.
