College student charged with murder of newborn daughter out on RM90k bail

. ZAINUDIN AHAD/The Star / 27 Jan 2021 GEORGE TOWN: The 19-year-old college student who allegedly tossed her baby out of a 13th floor apartment unit in July has been released on bail. M. Santhea, who was released on an RM90,000 bail with two surety, will report to Air Itam police station every Saturday and will not leave Penang. She arrived at the courthouse here to be released at about 1.50pm and left in a car driven by a family member at about 2.07pm on Wednesday (Jan 27). Santhea pleaded not guilty to killing her newborn daughter at the Sri Ivory Apartment in Bandar Baru, Ayer Itam at 8.25am on July 10 last year.

Judge Datuk Amirudin Abd Rahman said a decision would be made this Friday to determine whether M. Santhiea, 18, could be released on bail pending the trial. “I will need a few days to deliberate. Until the decision is made, she is to be further detained, ” he said at the High Court here yesterday.

Santhiea, 18, appeared shocked when magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap said bail was automatically revoked as the case has been transferred to the High Court. Jamaliah said she came to her decision after deliberating on the arguments of deputy public prosecutor Yazid Mustaqim Roslan and Santhiea s lawyer, S. Meharaj, on the revocation of bail. Based on the decision made in the Court of Appeal, the conditional bail was placed until the case is transferred to the High Court.

GEORGE TOWN: A teenager, who was charged with the murder of her newborn girl, was stunned when a Magistrate’s Court here revoked her bail. M. Santhiea, 18, was speechless as she looked towards her lawyer when magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap said the bail was automatically revoked as the case had been sent to the High Court. “The case is now transferred to the High Court and the bail no longer stands, ” she said after deliberating the views of Deputy Public Prosecutor Yazid Mustaqim Roslan and Santhiea’s lawyer S. Meharaj. The college student was charged on July 16 with the murder which took place at 8.25am on July 10 at Sri Ivory Apartment, Bandar Baru in Ayer Itam.
