A front-loader and a helicopter were called to rescue people stranded on the roofs of their vehicles, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said. A state of emergency was also declared in Marlborough by deputy mayor Nadine Taylor at 12.20pm. The Marlborough District Council has advised residents of the Lower Terrace in Renwick to evacuate their properties and stay with family or friends for the next 24 hours, as the stop bank at Conders Bend is beginning to overtop.

Warning to motorists as weather warnings come into effect Reporter: );   ); The Road Safety Authority (RSA), is asking road users to exercise caution while using the roads today as Met Eireann has issued Orange and Yellow weather warnings for strong winds. Met Eireann has issued an Orange Wind weather warning for Cork and Kerry from 8pm Wednesday to 12pm on Thursday. Southwest to west winds will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80km/h with damaging gusts to 120km/h for a time early tonight. A yellow weather warning is also in place for Ireland from 1pm Wednesday  until 7am Thursday. Strong to gale force southwesterly winds, veering westerly will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km.
