Request comes after latest guidance from American Academy of Pediatrics
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Orange County Teachers Union wants the school board to look at universal masking as coronavirus cases increase in Central Florida.
Mayor Jerry Demings and Dr. Raul Pino said Orange County is now seeing COVID-19 cases in numbers similar to what the area saw in January.
On July 13, the school board made masks optional for the upcoming school year after a 7-1 vote.
“[Monday] the American Academy of Pediatrics said all individuals over age 2 should wear masks in schools when they reopen this Fall,” the teachers union said in a Facebook post.

The governor gave an update on bonuses the state plans to award to all public school teachers and principals at schools across the state. When I sign the budget in the coming days we will deliver on our initiative to give $1,000 bonuses to every teacher and every classroom teacher. That’s almost 175,000 individuals and so we’re really proud of that, he said.

The bonuses will be in addition to adding $50 million more to teachers’ salary allocations, DeSantis explained.
ORLANDO, Fla. - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis believes getting students back in class is essential and that is why he says he wants to give teachers and principals a very big bonus.
If approved by lawmakers, a $1,000 bonus would be awarded to full-time teachers and principals.
The money would come from the third round of the elementary and secondary school emergency relief fund, which is $216 million dollars.
