More than $30 billion in unemployment benefits may have been stolen from the state of California by hackers, identity thieves and overseas crime syndicates.
Sophisticated hackers, identity thieves and overseas criminal rings stole over $11 billion in unemployment benefits from California last year, but the extent of the fraud might grow far larger: billions more in payments are under investigation.
California Labor Secretary Julie Su told reporters in a conference call Monday that of the $114 billion the state has paid in unemployment claims, about 10% or $11.4 billion have been confirmed as fraudulent.

SANTA ANA (CNS) - An attorney representing alleged sexual assault victims of a Newport Beach hand surgeon and his girlfriend alleged in court today that Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer is continuing to meddle in the prosecution of the case.
A spokeswoman for Spitzer denied the allegation and said the county s top prosecutor has cooperated with the Attorney General s Office, which is prosecuting the case against Dr. Grant Robicheaux, 40, and Cerissa Laura Riley, 33, who are accused of drugging and raping several women.
The District Attorney s Office was kicked off the case by an Orange County Superior Court judge last year.

OC sets new record in hospitalizations
SANTA ANA, Calif. - Orange County set another record for hospitalized COVID-19 patients, but the number of those in intensive care fell by 19 and 17 additional fatalities were reported.
The number of hospitalized patients increased from 2,236 Tuesday to 2,249 Wednesday as the number of patients in intensive care fell from 504 to 485, according to figures from the Orange County Health Care Agency.
Of the 17 additional fatalities, five were skilled nursing facility residents and a dozen were from assisted living facilities. The death toll is 1,943 with 655 of the dead from skilled nursing facilities and 198 from assisted living facilities.
