This year’s recipients of the Everyday Hero Awards have been named by the Upper Grand District School Board.
They include Orangeville District Secondary School teacher Leigha Turner.
The board says during the past year many of its staff, students community members and volunteers – went the extra mile during to meet the unique challenges posed by the pandemic.
The winners were selected from more than a dozen nomination categories and included a bus driver, student groups and volunteers.
A virtual ceremony to recognize the winners will be held May 10th.

Former Orangeville resident and Orangeville District Secondary School grad, Meghan Hebert, has been honoured for her work as a high-performance coach for the B.C. Provincial Snowboard Cross team.
Meghan received the Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation Award which is given to an emerging female leader in British Columbia whose dedication to the women and girls of B.C. parallels that of the woman the award is named after. The award comes with a $2000 grant.
Meghan received the award on Thursday, March 25, during Sports BC’s Athlete of the Year awards.
Managed by ProMotion Plus – a B.C based non-profit that strives to promote opportunities in sport and physical activity for woman and girls across the province – the prestigious award aims to provide financial support to activities dedicated to advancing gender equity.

Westside and Orangeville District Secondary School are welcoming a group of Japanese high school students this month, and they’re in need of host families.
MLI (Muskoka Language International) Homestay, who organized the stay, says the students will be arriving to Orangeville after completing their 14-day quarantine and after getting back 3 negative COVID test results.
Students will follow all protocols of the Quarantine Act in addition to the specific rules for International Students who are arriving from overseas as unaccompanied minors.
Host families are paid an honourarium of $875 per month for hosting a student.

The Ministry of Education announced that as of January 4, all elementary and secondary students will be temporarily shifting to virtual, remote learning.
While the switch isn’t an issue for students living in urban areas, its potentially jeopardizing the quality of education received in households with poor internet connections.
Abbey Spencer, a grade 11 student at Orangeville District Secondary School (ODSS) says she’s been having technical and educational issues with online learning. Living in Mono, she doesn’t have access to high-speed internet, so her mom reached out to the school to obtain textbooks and worksheets in case she can’t login to live learning with the rest of her class.
