The plan came into effect at midnight last night, 30th December for all measures, with the exception of non-essential retail and gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools.  These businesses should close from close of business on 31st December.  Level 5 restrictions will remain in place until midnight on 31st January 2021. The Government has considered a number of factors in arriving at this decision, particularly   NPHET concerns that the epidemiological profile of COVID-19 has continued to deteriorate very substantially.

Taoiseach confirms return to Level 5 restrictions with no visitors to homes from midnight

LMFM By Ruth O Connell Level 5 restrictions are being re-imposed for at least one month. Gyms and non-essential retail will be shut from close of business tomorrow, while no visitors will be allowed to private homes from this evening. Six guests will be permitted at weddings, with 10 mourners allowed to attend funerals. The Taoiseach has also revealed schools will remain closed until January 11th in an address this evening. Micheál Martin says it is still the view of public health that schools are safe, and explains why they are delaying the reopening schools:     1,718 new confirmed cases of Covid 19 have been reported in the last 24 hours and 13 further deaths.
