UCOL Wins National Contract To Upskill Home-based Early Childhood Educators

Friday, 16 April 2021, 8:51 am After the success of UCOL’s Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 4) programme, the Ministry of Education has selected UCOL as one of their preferred education providers to upskill Early Childhood Educators across New Zealand. Last year the Government announced that all home-based early childhood educators must hold a New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care Level 4 as a minimum qualification by 2025. “That means there are currently approximately 6,500 educators working in the home-based Early Childhood sector who will need to gain this qualification within the next four years,” says Dr Bridget Percy, UCOL’s Head of School for Education.

Whitehorse Daily Star: Leaders review their stances during CBC forum

A generally bland, if not outright congenial, leaders’ forum late Wednesday afternoon produced few fireworks. The forum, hosted and aired by CBC Yukon, featured a round-table question and answer session that didn’t allow for a debate per se, or even much chance for the candidates to respond to each other. For the most part, the leaders circled around familiar issues that have been extensively discussed in their campaigning, news releases and other public meetings. The first series of questions dealt with COVID-19 issues. The leaders were all pressed on whether they would “follow the advice” of chief medical officer of health Dr. Brendan Hanley.

Education reform excludes some children

Winnipeg Free Press By: Brenda Still Opinion Why are school-age children being excluded? Provincial government statistics indicate just under 13,000, or 12 per cent of, children aged six to 12 years, had the opportunity to attend licensed school-age (SA) child-care programs in our province. But if Bill 47, The Early Learning and Child Care Act, is passed this may no longer be the case. It is not what is written in this bill that is worrying, but what is missing. This bill defines a child as an individual under the age of 12, a preschool-age child , as a child two years of age or older who is not a SA and an infant as a child under two years. Yet, within the body of the bill there is no mention of services for SA children.

In 2002, when my first son was about 6 months old, he, his father and I went to visit some of my extended family. At one point I sat with my young cousin, who was about 7 years old, and asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. “My mom said I can be anything I want!” she answered. “As long as it isn’t a stay-at-home mom.”
