PSM can be run under public-private partnership, moot told

Karachi March 7, 2021 Noted economist Dr Kaiser Bengali has suggested running Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) under a public-private partnership, saying that as the government wants to privatise it and workers are not able to take it over, the private sector with financial investment would make it possible to run it. He was speaking at a consultation on the privatisation of public sector enterprises organised by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler) at the Arts Council of Pakistan on Saturday. Dr Bengali pointed out that the main excuse for privatisation was given by the government that workers were responsible for the loss of public entities such as the PSM.

Labour leaders caution against politicising workers welfare institutions National December 26, 2020 KARACHI: Trade unions and labour leaders have urged both the federal and Sindh governments to avoid politicising the EOBI and Workers Welfare Fund issues and to bring some massive reforms to the service delivery of these social security institutions for the universalisation of the social security services in Pakistan. Speaking at an online consultation on ‘Future of workers welfare institutions like EOBI & WWF’ on Zoom platform, organised by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler) here on Thursday, the labour leaders deplored that the social security institutions had failed to serve the majority of workers.

KARACHI: To mark International Human Rights Day, a webinar on ‘Prisoners of contention speaking of issues and rights of Indo-Pak prisoners’ was held here on Thursday. The event was organised by the Pakistan India Peoples’ Forum for Peace and Democracy (PIPFPD) in collaboration with several non-government organisations, including the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF), Edhi Foundation, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), Legal Aid Society, Pakistan, Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler) and Aman ki Asha. Most of the Indian citizens in Pakistan’s prisons and Pakistani citizens in Indian prisons are innocent captives of circumstances, destiny as well as the historical contention between India and Pakistan. They become victims of tense relations and do not get released and repatriated on the day of completing their sentences.
