More than 99% of pregnant women admitted to hospital with Covid-19 are unvaccinated – with the Delta variant of coronavirus posing a significantly greater risk of severe disease, scientists have said. Researchers at Oxford University have described their findings as “concerning”, saying that one in 10 pregnant women admitted to hospital with symptoms of Covid-19 often require intensive care. In a study, published in an online server called medRxiv, the scientists said that vaccinations are able to offer effective protection from the risk of becoming severely ill from Covid-19, with far fewer numbers from vaccinated groups in hospital compared with those who have not had the jab.

An increase in foreign travel this summer is concerning, while autumn could prove to be a particularly “risky point” for the UK, scientists advising the Government have warned. In documents given to ministers earlier this month, scientists from the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling, Operational sub-group (SPI-M-O) raised concerns about the return of students to schools and universities for the autumn term - which could place “significant pressures” on the NHS. The document, dated July 14, stated the importance of global surveillance of new variants and warned that September and October will be a “particularly risky point in the trajectory of the epidemic”.
