Bob Dunning: She s a natural at it

Bob Dunning: She’s a natural at it A STAR IS BORN … Not that she needs another job, but I suspect that Davis Mayor Gloria Partida will soon be in demand as a voiceover specialist for a variety of concerns and perhaps even commercial products. The mayor’s often-played public service announcement urging Davis citizens to take advantage of free COVID testing through the Healthy Davis Together initiative shows what a competent announcer she is. Her voice is clear and comforting and she speaks with a clarity generally seen only in seasoned professionals. Now, I don’t imagine her joining Cal Worthington and selling used cars on late-night television, but if another worthy cause needs a voice, Gloria might be just the one to effectively get their message across to the general public.

School board to discuss bringing students back Shares The Davis school board will discuss its options for bringing students back into school classrooms for at least a portion of each week during Thursday’s meeting. Staff will point out the pluses and minuses associated with each option. This will be the first time that the school board trustees discuss the specific proposals for return to campus during open session the school board’s discussions up to this point have been largely conceptual, while staff has researched how the various options would play out in the context of the Davis school district and its facilities.

Local leaders concerned about scary COVID variant

Local leaders concerned about ‘scary’ COVID variant The governor may have lifted the regional stay-at-home order covering Yolo County last week, but a more infectious new variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, and continued high case levels connected to holiday gatherings, call for increasing vigilance, according to those overseeing Healthy Davis Together. In an update to the Davis City Council last week, Dr. Brad Pollock, chair of the public health sciences department in the UC Davis Medical School, said he was “a little surprised by Gov. (Gavin) Newsom’s lifting the stay-at-home order now, given the fact that we think there’s still going to be an increase (in cases).”

Owen Yancher: Done with my 7-day free trial of 2021; how do I unsubscribe?

Owen Yancher: Done with my 7-day free trial of 2021; how do I unsubscribe? ANY TAKERS? … Since seeing the New Year’s First Davis Baby Contest advertised in The Enterprise last week, I have been determined to take the crown (and, obviously, the myriad gift cards that come along with it).  The contest rules do not stipulate the need to be the father of the first child born in the new year in order to obtain the prizes. The only specifications are that “the baby must be born at Sutter Davis Hospital” and that “one parent must contact The Davis Enterprise office and provide the necessary information verifying the child as the first baby of 2021.”

Latest public health order imposes more restrictions on businesses

The Aggie Threat of COVID-19 still looms as retailers are forced to operate at 20% capacity The most recent stay-at-home order in the greater Sacramento region included Yolo County, which limited retail to operation at 20% at grocery stores to 35% capacity. Yolo County Public Information Officer Jenny Tan explained via email how the regional stay-at-home order impacted businesses. “The Order has impacted the County in a lot of ways – economically, mentally, and also related to the pandemic,” Tan said via email. “The Order was meant to slow the spread of COVID in areas/locations where it was still possible to interact with people outside the home, however, people seem to still be gathering for get togethers, parties, etc.”
