Grant applications for Healthy Soil Program now being accepted

Eligible Entities can sign up by July 2, 2021 Headlight staff reports LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico Department of Agriculture is accepting grant applications for its Healthy Soil Program, which was created in the 2019 Healthy Soil Act.  The act’s purpose is to promote and support farming and ranching systems and other forms of land management that increase soil organic matter, aggregate stability, microbiology and water retention to improve the state’s soil health, yield and profitability. Potential applicants include Eligible Entities, such as nations, tribes and pueblos; land grants; acequias; soil and water conservation districts (SWCDs); and New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service. Farmers and ranchers may also apply, provided they have secured project support from an SWCD or a nation, tribe or pueblo. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, July 2. Late applications will not be accepted.

Governor Newsom announced that he plans to make significant investments in California’s Central Valley to promote a healthier, more resilient, food and agricultural system. President Ian LeMay stated, “Over the last several years California’s farmers and ranchers have continued to be faced with unprecedented challenges. Through labor and water shortages, to increased regulatory burdens, growers have continued to rise to the occasion to ensure the nation and world continue to have a safe and reliable food supply.

NM Dept. of Agriculture plans healthy soil webinar on May 21st Farmers, ranchers encouraged to apply Headlight staff reports LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico Department of Agriculture’s Healthy Soil Program will host a webinar from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday, May 21 to show potential applicants the steps to take to be considered for a grant. The grants fund on-the-ground projects to improve soil health in the state.  “We are pleased to announce we have received grant funding through state appropriations for a third consecutive year to improve soil health in New Mexico,” said New Mexico Agriculture Secretary Jeff Witte. “Our updated Healthy Soil Program grant application process reflects the substantive input offered by Eligible Entities and the farmers and ranchers within their communities during the four virtual listening sessions we held in March and April.”
