Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday slammed Congress after party leaders raised concern over the grant of permission for the restricted use of Covaxin without its phase 3 trials.
Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor, Anand Sharma, Jairam Ramesh and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned the approval process for Bharat Biotech s Covid-19 vaccine, saying it is premature and can prove dangerous.

New Delhi, Jan 03: Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Sunday launched a scathing attack at Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor, Jairam Ramesh and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for doubting the approval given to Bharat Biotech s vaccine while its third phase trial is going on.
Harsh Vardhan Disgraceful for anyone to politicise such a critical issue. Shashi Tharoor, Akhilesh Yadav and Jairam Ramesh-don t try to discredit well laid out science-backed protocols followed for approving Covid-19 vaccines, Vardhan tweeted.
Yadav has questioned India s Covid-19 vaccines and said he won t take BJP s vaccine . Congress leaders like Anand Sharma, Jairam Ramesh and Shashi Tharoor raised concern over the grant of approval to it without the phase 3 trials, saying it is premature and can prove dangerous.
The number of new infections in the country is 4.7 per cent lower than yesterday.
New Delhi: India has reported 18,177 new infections in the last 24 hours - 4.7 per cent lower than yesterday - taking the total Coronavirus cases to 1,03,23,965 on Sunday, the government data this morning showed. With 217 deaths related to the highly contagious disease in the same period, the total number of fatalities in the country has risen to 1,49435. The COVID-19 case fatality rate stood at 1.45 per cent. The number of active cases in the country stood at 2,47,220 while the number of recoveries is at 99,27, 310 with 20,923 people recuperating from the disease in the last 24 hours.

The Central Licensing Authority on Saturday granted permission to Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech to manufacture Covaxin for sale and distribution, after the indigenous coronavirus vaccine received regulatory approval for emergency use.
The pharmaceutical firm has also been asked to submit updated safety, efficacy, and immunogenicity data from the ongoing Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III clinical trials till the completion of the trials.
