NEW DELHI In September, India was reporting almost 100,000 Covid-19 cases a day, with many predicting it would soon pass the U.S. in overall cases. Instead, its infections dropped and are now at one-fourth that level.
India has brought down its virus numbers, despite often being too crowded for social distancing, having too many cases for effective contact tracing and an economy that isn’t well equipped to weather long lockdowns.
One of the main reasons, Indian health officials say, is that the country has managed to encourage and enforce almost universal acceptance of masks without much debate.

India reported fewer than 200,000 new coronavirus cases for the second straight week. But even as the pandemic continued to slow down at the national level, the one in Kerala is only getting worse. After slowing down for a while, fresh cases now signal a new wave of infections in the state.
Kerala’s share in India’s case-load rose alarmingly, as it accounted for 23% of the 167,221 new cases reported in the last seven days. This is as much about Kerala’s pacing outbreak as about the slowdown everywhere else. The gap with Maharashtra, the state with the second biggest share (12%), is widening. Both states had around 13% share each in early December.

India has recorded a second week with fewer than 200,000 new coronavirus cases being reported in the country. Having said that, as the pandemic seems to be curbing on a national level, one of the otherwise best performing states - Kerala - is seeing the condition worsen in terms of pandemic management.
A new wave of infections is said to have hit Kerala, with the state accounting for about 23 per cent of the 167,221 cases reported over the past week. While other states are seeing a slowdown, the opposite is being observed in Kerala. In early December, both Kerala and Maharashtra had a share of 13 per cent.
