Surge in new COVID-19 infections follows low vaccine uptake in northern Sask , health authority says

SASKATOON COVID-19 infections continue to rise in Saskatchewan’s northern communities, prompting a lockdown and a nudge to the provincial government to make this a priority. According to a report by the Athabasca Health Authority (AHA) 34 active cases are in the region, many of which originate in Black Lake, a small Dene reserve with a population of about 1,325. This time last month, the region only had three active cases, according to AHA. Twenty-eight per cent of the region is fully vaccinated according to AHA, and in Black Lake the percentage of fully vaccinated individuals drops to 14 per cent. The rest of Saskatchewan is sitting at around 54 per cent of people who are fully vaccinated, according to the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).

Much to consider before approving third vaccine dose for travellers: Doctor, NDP

REGINA As the Government of Saskatchewan considers potential third COVID-19 vaccine doses for travellers heading to countries where Astra-Zeneca or mixed doses are not recognized, experts say there are many variables to consider. Earlier this week, Quebec approved a third dose for travellers whose original doses weren’t approved in other countries at their own risk. On Tuesday, Health Minister Paul Merriman said the decision to allow third doses in Saskatchewan would be up to Dr. Saqib Shahab, the chief medical health officer. The health minister emphasized the extra doses Quebec is offering have nothing to do with vaccine efficacy and only are about ease of movement for those travelling internationally.

Incentives, last mile program needed to increase COVID-19 vaccination uptake: Sask NDP

Regina / 980 CJME Jul 28, 2021 | 4:28 PM Saskatchewan NDP leader Ryan Meili thinks the province should be looking at incentives and added outreach programs to get more people in Saskatchewan vaccinated. (Lara Fominoff/650 CKOM) Saskatchewan NDP Leader Ryan Meili thinks Premier Scott Moe and Health Minister Paul Merriman have “packed it in” on the COVID front. “They’ve decided not just to put the toolbox away, but to throw it in the lake and ignore it,” Meili said during a news conference Wednesday. “They’ve refused over and over again to look at incentives. They’ve refused to ramp up a “last mile program” doing the outreach by phone, booking appointments, getting people in and they’ve also refused to put any barriers in the way so that people are sure to vaccinate before they go to large events where the virus could spread, like Rider games.”
