One of Saskatchewan’s top doctors says the province’s critical care system is still under unprecedented strain, even if the speeding pace of vaccinations offers hope on the horizon.
Saskatchewan Health Authority chief medical health officer Dr. Susan Shaw said Saskatoon’s intensive care units were on bypass Friday morning, in part due to the continued high numbers of young patients hospitalized by aggressive variants of COVID-19.

Shaw, also an ICU physician, said the city’s intensive care units have expanded their physical footprint and may have to grow even further to accommodate the number of patients in coming days.

In the legislature on Monday, Merriman added that “racism has no place within the health authority, within the Ministry of Health, and within the government.”
“And if anybody is saying racist comments, they have no place in our workforce,” he added.
Nippi-Albright, who is from Kinistin Saulteaux Nation, worked on the Saskatoon Health Region’s 2008 Aboriginal Health Strategy, which urged the creation of a systemic racism strategy. The Saskatchewan Health Authority has such a strategy, but says its work is on pause during the pandemic.
Nippi-Albright said she wants action to improve the experiences and outcomes of Indigenous people who need care, starting with anti-racism training and better representation of First Nations and Métis people among senior staff.
