The Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza announced tha the country still required restrictions in order to stop the COVID-19 infection from getting out of control.
While the vaccine provides hope, the measures are still needed to prevent an uncontrolled increase in infections,” Speranza told a meeting with regional governments.
“No one should underestimate the seriousness of the situation”. The minister also said that Italy would now have “very different” COVID figures if it were not for the restrictions imposed over the Christmas holidays.
Most of Italy went back to being a “yellow zone” on Monday as the nation reverted to a tiered system of restrictions based on each region’s level of COVID-19 contagion risk after spending most of the Christmas holidays in lockdown.

Italy’s government is set to tighten coronavirus restrictions in Milan and its surrounding area, as well as four other regions, in an attempt to counter an acceleration in the spread of the pandemic.
Health Minister Roberto Speranza on Friday will sign a new order listing Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna in the north, and Sicily and Calabria in the south as medium-risk “orange zones from Jan. 10, according to a statement. This will trigger curbs including the closing of bars and restaurants, and strict limits on people s movements.
