Seanad hears no light at end of tunnel for capacity issues at UHG

Galway Bay FM 10 May 2021 print Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Seanad has heard there’s “no light at the end of the tunnel” with regards ongoing capacity issues at UHG. The matter was raised by Senator Sean Kyne, who spoke of chronic overcrowding being experienced at the city hospital over the past month. He also referenced the total lack of progress on a long-awaited new emergency department, despite the current unit being completely unfit for purpose. He asked if the HSE would consider sending a specialist team to Galway to examine the overcrowding issues over the past month. Senator Kyne also said it is “depressing” that there’s been no progress on a new ED at UHG, despite an expectation that a planning application would be lodged in 2018.

Deputy Jackie Cahill says this is not the first time the unit has been closed due to the lack of a full-time consultant being appointed by the HSE. The Fianna Fail TD has been in contact with Health Minister Stephen Donnelly to highlight the issues affecting what he describes as this vital facility for the town of Nenagh and North Tipperary generally. Cahill is hoping a full-time consultant can be appointed immediately. “I have written to Minister Donnelly urging him to have the HSE appoint a permanent consultant for the Medical Assessment Unit in Nenagh.”

Doctor slams vaccine debacle - The Clare Champion

Doctor slams vaccine debacle Dr Joe Griffin (68) was relieved when he received his vaccination appointment recently, having waited so long. After returning from England where he was attending his wife’s mother’s funeral, he was in quarantine at home and was unable to attend. On the Department of the Taoiseach website, it states that he can only leave his home in certain circumstances including medical reasons and he wondered if getting vaccinated was a valid reason for travel. In a statement issued to the Clare Champion, he recalled telephoning a telephone number he received in a text message and waited over 20 minutes in various queues just to speak to a person. After explaining his dilemma, he was put on hold because the person he was speaking with did not know whether or not he should attend for his vaccination. After further delays, he was eventually transferred to a supervisor who told him not to attend but to cancel his appointment.
