Shame on You, New York Times! Scientists Speak Out Media Disinformation China

Comments ATexas teenager has been forced to use her entire college savings to prevent her single mother from being evicted after she lost her job amid a raging pandemic. Alondra Carmona of Houston made the appeal on crowdfunding site GoFundMe, noting that she had been accepted into prestigious New York university Barnard College, but that she used the money she had saved for tuition in order to save her mother. Some of the world’s top scientists are condemning The New York Times for what they describe as a highly misleading hit job on their recent visit to Wuhan, China.

We need a global outbreak investigation team—Now

This week, a much anticipated fact-finding mission into the origins of Covid-19 returned from a month-long field visit to China. The team of scientists appointed by the World Health Organization is currently writing up their findings, which will be published in a summary report next week, with a full report expected to follow sometime after that. But on Tuesday, at a joint briefing with Chinese health officials, the team’s leaders gave the world a sneak peek at what new information they had unearthed. In short, not much. “Did we change dramatically the picture we had beforehand? I don’t think so,” said Peter Ben Embarek, a zoonosis expert with the WHO who headed the investigation. Like a majority of scientists, the group still favors the idea that SARS-CoV-2 originated in animals before spilling into humans. “Did we improve our understanding? Did we add details to that story? Absolutely,” he continued.

JOHN NAISH: So-called World Health chiefs have become lickspittle witnesses in a Chinese charade

The pandemic didn’t begin in a Chinese laboratory. Nor did it start in Wuhan. Nor indeed, in all probability, did it start in China at all. If the Chinese were hoping to be exonerated from blame over the origins of the coronavirus that has caused nearly 2.5 million deaths worldwide, they could not have wished for better than yesterday’s World Health Organisation findings. The investigation by the joint WHO-China mission to investigate the origins of the outbreak is a disgrace. As someone who has probed the origins of the virus in depth for this newspaper, I must start by saying I do not believe Covid-19 was man-made and released from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

COVAX going ahead with distribution of AstraZeneca vaccines — GAVI

The Global Vaccine Alliance, GAVI, a lead partner in the WHO-led COVAX initiative for COVID-19 vaccines has said the portfolio will continue rolling out the AstraZeneca vaccine despite a study showing that it was less effective against a new fast-spreading variant of the novel coronavirus first detected in South Africa
