The Wellington region – including the Wairarapa and north of Ōtaki – has been at alert level 2 since 6pm last Wednesday after it was confirmed that a Sydney tourist with coronavirus had visited the city the previous weekend. He was later confirmed to have the highly infectious Delta variant. Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said about two per cent of the capital’s population had been tested for the virus. The rest of the country has remained at alert level 1. No infections of Covid-19 have been detected in the New Zealand community since the man from Sydney arrived in Wellington. However, experts have urged Kiwis to remain vigilant as the tourist’s partner, who had travelled with him, tested positive for the virus, despite the tourist having received his first Covid vaccination shot. That would mean he was likely infectious while in Wellington.

WELLINGTON, June 29 (Xinhua) New Zealand will resume the quarantine free travel bubble with some Australian states from Sunday after Wellington relaxes COVID-19 restrictions on Tuesday night.
The capital will move back down to alert level 1 from midnight on Tuesday due to zero community transmission found after the COVID-19 alert moved up to level 2 about a week ago, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield told a press conference.
The raising of alert level on Wednesday was due to a Sydney tourist who visited Wellington between June 18 and 21 and tested positive for the more infectious Delta variant of COVID-19 upon returning to Australia.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday told reporters there was nothing to suggest the latest shipments would be delayed for any reason. Hipkins said there is just under 30,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine ready to be distributed in the country at present. Another 50,000 arrived today and had not yet been processed for distribution. Even with this latest batch, supply of the vaccine would be “pretty tight” over the coming week, something that would be “keeping me awake over the next seven days”, he said. Hipkins said supply is the “big issue holding back vaccination for group 3” but people in group 3 should be contacted for a booking by the end of July.
