Cavs Get Variance For More Fans At FieldHouse | Newsradio WTAM 1100

By Tom Moore Dec 30, 2020 (Cleveland) - More Cavaliers fans will be able to attend games at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, thanks to the Cavs receiving a variance from the State of Ohio. Originally, the state said, that due to COVID-19 restrictions, only 300 people could attend Cavs games. The state has now increased that to 1,944, which is 10% of the building s capacity. In their request to the Ohio Department of Health, Cavs officials submitted a detailed plan to safely host fans during the pandemic. In her response, state Health Director Stephanie McCloud said, “I am approving this variance because of the Cavaliers’ extremely comprehensive and detailed activation plan, and particularly given the FieldHouse’s creation of increased space on the south side, increased concourse ceiling height (by three feet) and state-of-the-art HVAC system to address air quality,”

Mike DeWine announced Wednesday, noting that the impacts from holiday celebrations aren’t clear at this time. The curfew started on Nov. 19 and initially scheduled to last 21 days. However, with concerns that holiday travel would add to already surging cases and hospitalizations, the state extended the curfew through Saturday, Jan. 2.

- Protesters gathered outside GOP Senate President Larry Obhof s personal home Sunday seeking to pressure him to override a gubernatorial veto of legislation to weaken the health department. The crowd at Obhof s was a conservative potpourri. Judi Phelps, who wore bright pink snowpants with a pistol holstered at her leg, said she organized the protest. Anti-vaccine advocates came, as did the Proud Boys, a far-right organization that was involved in a Washington D.C. brawl in which four people were stabbed after the Million MAGA March this month. No testing, tracing [or] vaccines. We will not comply, one woman s sign at the protest stated.
