Don t lift Medicare levy to fund aged care

MacroBusiness Access Subscriber Only Content at 12:20 pm on April 19, 2021 | 20 comments New modelling undertaken on behalf of the Health Services Union indicates that an additional $20 billion over four years is needed to provide high-quality aged care, and these extra funds could be raised by increasing the Medicare levy from 2% to 2.65%: HSU national president and NSW secretary Gerard Hayes… said HSU’s Medicare proposal would deliver the necessary funding and, if there was a better idea out there, he would “love to hear it”. I staunchly oppose raising the Medicare Levy to fund aged care for the following reasons: Over-65s are the wealthiest demographic in Australia, with over 80% owning their homes, whereas home ownership has collapsed for younger Australians.

Barrister’s $27m estate to be distributed to controversial parties  By Naomi Neilson|13 April 2021 The NSW Supreme Court has examined the “suspicious circumstances” behind the multiple wills of a prominent, deceased barrister whose later life was marred by deteriorating health, an “exploitative” affiliation with a man many years his junior and complicated and ever-shifting relationships with many close friends and family.  Although notoriously a “penny pincher”, deceased barrister David Rolfe enjoyed a lavish lifestyle, friendships with prominent people and an estate valued at $27 million. Between 1995 and 2014, Mr Rofe drafted several wills distributing this value between several parties who are now debating what they should be owed.

COVID vaccine fallout: Aged care, disability workers scramble to source COVID-19 jabs

“If COVID gets into one of these homes it will spread like wildfire and these residents will die,” he said. Kate Marshall, assistant state secretary of Health and Community Services Union, estimates 98 per cent of disability workers who were meant to be in Australia’s first wave of vaccinations – group 1a – had not yet got the shot. Some members have been told by GPs they would have to be put on vaccine waiting lists for three or four months to receive their first jab, she said. In contrast, almost all of the residents in the approximately 200 aged care homes that are run by the Victorian government have received their first dose (some residents in these homes received AstraZeneca while others got Pfizer).

Labor s NSW conference extravaganza delayed over Upper Hunter by-election

Labor s NSW conference extravaganza delayed over Upper Hunter by-election11/04/2021|2min New South Wales Labor has delayed its state conference “extravaganza” and moved it from June to October due to the upcoming Upper Hunter by-election says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell. Political tension over the by-election for the tightly contested seat is escalating given the Coalition won the seat in the previous election by a very small margin. Mr Clennell also suggested there were two further reason behind the date change including financial troubles relating to the ICAC Chinese donations fiasco and a Senate seat fight between Deborah O’Neill and Kristina Keneally.
