Govt hopeful of procuring 1 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines by March 31: PM s aide

DawnNewsTV Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan on Wednesday expressed confidence in the government s ability to procure at least one million doses of coronavirus vaccines by March, saying it ultimately aimed to inoculate 70 per cent of the country s population against the virus. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, he spoke about the two vaccines that have already been approved by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) one manufactured by China s Sinopharm and the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. We are in the advanced stage of discussion for procurement with two companies: Sinopharm and Cansino. Sinopharm s vaccine is the one you have heard about being used in several countries including the UAE. It has an efficacy of 80 per cent and in some places, 85pc efficacy has also been reported.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan on Wednesday hoped that the government would procure at least one million doses of the Covid-19 jabs by March, maintaining that it aimed to vaccinate 70% of the country’s population against the deadly contagion.

Top Story December 20, 2020 ISLAMABAD: The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has reported another 87 deaths due to Covid-19 in the last 24 hours across the country as 36 deaths occurred in Punjab followed by Sindh 32. Out of 87 deaths, 45 died on ventilators. At least 2486 Covid-19 patients were in critical condition across Pakistan and the number of critical patients is rising fast. In all, 3179 people tested positive as total active Covid cases in Pakistan were 40,922 up to December 19. A total of 48,075 tests conducted on December 18. A total of 404,501 people recovered so far across Pakistan making it a significant count. A total of 454,673 cases have been detected so far. According to NCOC, the national positivity ratio is 6.61% with highest ratio observed in Karachi 11.80%, followed by Peshawar 9.23% and Mirpur 7.92%.

If the people were careful, the war against Covid-19 could be won quickly, otherwise the government would be forced to take tough decisions, he said.
