For the second consecutive day, Pakistan reported more than 4,000 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, data from the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) showed.
The national tally of total active Covid-19 cases was recorded at 59761 with 4,497 more people testing positive for the deadly virus on Thursday. At least 76 patients died on Thursday, of whom 70 were under treatment in hospitals and six in their respective quarantines or homes, according to the latest update issued by the NCOC. On Thursday, most of the deaths occurred in Sindh followed by Punjab. Out of total 76 deaths, 37 died on ventilators during their treatment. The federal government will be ramping up critical care capacity in Karachi as the Delta variant continued to spread unabated in the city, announced the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Friday.
In a tweet, the NCOC stated that it “critically reviewed” the rapid spread of the virus in the city and decided to assist the Sindh government through all possible measures.

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: The Sindh government is mulling a complete lockdown in Karachi as the city’s hospitals are ‘nearing saturation point’, members from the provincial task force on coronavirus told The News on Thursday.
The task force’s members said the final decision to impose a lockdown in the port city would be taken in a meeting tomorrow at 11am, with Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah in the chair.
Provincial government officials told Geo News that medical experts within the task force have asked for a complete 14-day lockdown in the city. ‘Hospitals are nearing a saturation point with cases in Karachi rising rapidly,’ the task force members said, adding that the Sindh government was consulting stakeholders on the imposition of a lockdown.

ISLAMABAD: National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) chief Asad Umar on Thursday voiced his opposition to doctors’ calls for a complete lockdown in Karachi which has seen its coronavirus positivity ratio surge to 30 per cent – stressing it was “not the solution”.
“In the past one year, we have learnt that shutting down had not worked and it won’t work now. So the only way forward is to vaccinate and follow SOPs,” Umar said with regard to the Pakistan Medical Association’s call for a 15-day lockdown in the metropolis after hospitals filled up with Covid patients infected with what authorities say is the highly contagious Delta strain of the virus.
