210 public healthcare providers in the State had lost their lives because of Covid
Out of 210 public healthcare providers in Maharashtra who lost their lives during Covid-19, family members of just 58 healthcare providers, that is 28 per cent, have received insurance amount under the central government’s insurance scheme for health workers fighting Covid-19.
The central government had announced the ‘Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package Insurance Scheme for Health Workers Fighting Covid-19’. The scheme provides an insurance cover of ₹50 lakh for public healthcare providers, including community health workers, who may have to be in direct contact of Covid-19 patients and took care of them.
Extension for another six months.
New Delhi: In view of the prevailing COVID situation in the country, the government has extended Insurance scheme for frontline health workers for another six months.
This was decided on last Friday (May 30), after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review the functioning of different empowered groups through video conference.
A statement said Modi has also asked officials to explore how volunteers from civil society can be utilised to lessen the pressure on healthcare sector by being drafted in non-specialised tasks, as the government looks to further step up its response to fighting COVID-19.

New Delhi: More than 50 lakh healthcare and frontline workers have been vaccinated against coronavirus in 21 days in India which is the fastest rate in the world, Minister of State for Health Ashwini Choubey told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Responding to a question on vaccine hesitancy, he said at the start of COVID-19 vaccination drive, fewer than planned beneficiaries attended the vaccination sessions due to transient technical issues in CoWIN portal, vaccine hesitancy, among others, which have progressively been addressed.
