Outstanding Graduates Will Be Honored for Service, Academics and Perseverance

Chris Richards/University of Arizona Seven graduating University of Arizona seniors will be honored for their extraordinary accomplishments during a series of graduation ceremonies to celebrate the class of 2021. This year s smaller in-person ceremonies are split by programs, and graduates were able to invite up to four guests. The events begin on May 10 in Phoenix, where the College of Medicine – Phoenix will hold its ceremony on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus. Additional celebrations will take place May 11-18, with main campus ceremonies being held at Arizona Stadium and the Cole and Jeannie Davis Sports Center. All ceremonies will be streamed live on the Commencement website and University of Arizona YouTube page.

WWJ reporter Vickie Thomas retires after more than 30 years in Detroit broadcast journalism

After more than 30 years in Detroit broadcast journalism, award-winning reporter Vickie Thomas says she’s ready to start a new chapter. She retired from radio station WWJ April 29, and she’ll be joining Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration as director of communications for the city. Stateside caught up with the veteran journalist on the eve of her retirement from WWJ to discuss her years of experience bringing Detroit stories to the air. From medicine to media Thomas says journalism wasn’t her first calling. When she started college at Michigan State University, she planned to become a nurse like her mother.

Focus on Youth

Scottsboro High School Senior A young lady who has maintained an A average in both her high school and college courses and plans to enter the medical field is this week’s outstanding youth.  Morgan Sanders is a senior at Scottsboro High School. Morgan is a member of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).  She is a seven time gold card recipient having been recognized with a gold card each semester at the STAR (Students and Teachers for Academic Recognition) Program. This top student says that math and science are her favorite school subjects.  “They have just been easier for me to understand and to enjoy,” she adds.

Ashbrook senior earns $80,000 scholarship through CaroMont Health

An Ashbrook High School senior will receive up to $80,000 while earning a nursing degree at the University of South Carolina.  CaroMont Health Foundation recently awarded the Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship, named in honor of the former longtime CEO of CaroMont Health, to Sophi Jolley. Shovelin scholars must pursue a career in healthcare and excel in their high school classes. As a Shovelin scholar, Jolley will get up to $20,000 a year while studying nursing and earning a minor in Spanish. She will also be offered three paid internships at CaroMont Health.   CaroMont Health Foundation’s scholarship committee chose Jolley based on her passion and empathy for caring for others.

Springfield district s ROSE banquet: Kickapoo s Top 11 from Class of 2021

Eleven Kickapoo High School seniors will be honored April 15 during the Springfield district s Recognition of Scholastic Excellence, or ROSE, banquet. Each year, the 10 graduating students with the highest GPA from each high school are honored. This year, due to ties in GPA, Kickapoo and Parkview high schools each have 11 honorees. The News-Leader will showcase students from each high school this week. The ROSE banquet will be hosted by Missouri State University this year. Jenna Grace Biser The child of Bobby Biser and Sheri Biser, Jenna plans to earn a degree in mechanical engineering from Missouri State University. Her high school activities include soccer, National Honor Society, Springfield Robotics, Kickapoo University and Chief Mentors.
