The May rate was down half of a percentage point from the April rate of 6.3 percent. Last year the rate was 12.9 percent in May. The U.S. unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in May, down three-tenths of a percentage point from April. The U.S. rate was 13.3 percent in May 2020. The number of unemployed Rhode Island residents those residents classified as available for and actively seeking employment was 31,200, down 2,600 from April. The number of unemployed residents decreased by 36,100 over the year.
